Hey Toronto. Let’s Play Spot It.
Do you know where this elephant sculpture is in the video? Made entirely out of leather couch materials?
Couch Monster
This “Couch Monster” by artist Brian Jungen was inspired by the true story of Jumbo the elephant who was a captive circus elephant killed by a train in St. Thomas, Ontario in 1885. Jungen used several leather couches to convey how captivity can “break the spirit and will of these animals.
The artist chose bronze because it would gradually age and resemble the look of the original, aged couches. This was his last creation before his studio burned down in the British Columbia wildfires in 2021.
But The Couch Monster and the tribute to Jumbo is alive and well on this street corner in Toronto. Did you nail it? Be sure to share your bragging rights!
