With all the construction going on at Ontario Place, what exactly is happening and when can we expect completion?
A Bit of History
Ontario Place first opened in 1971 with the world’s first permanent IMAX theatre, housed in the iconic Cinesphere, changing Toronto’s waterfront forever.
Since then, Ontario Place grew to include a water and amusement park. But these, along with the Cinesphere, have been closed since 2012 due to low attendance and mounting financial losses. In fact, Ontario Place ran a deficit of over $20 million per year before it closed. This sparked the province’s plan for a total redevelopment.
What’s Happening Today
This brings us to the construction site we’ll see until its 2029 completion date. Here’s a look at what’s to come, but before we do, know that we can still visit Trillium Park, the beautiful trails that wrap around Lake Ontario and Budweiser Stage still hosting live concerts.

How Much We Talkin’ Here?
The total cost for the Ontario Place redevelopment, including the new Ontario Science Centre relocation, is projected to be approximately $2.2 billion
As you can see from these newly released photos and videos, we can finally realize Ontario’s exciting plans to restore this part of our waterfront that has sat unused for over a decade.
