Queen Spadina Heritage Wall

Ever wonder why a new construction site executes a major work-around involving one wall amidst a complete demolition?

For the North East building at Spadina and Queen, the city’s efforts in restoring and preserving parts of its former heritage building is the reason for all the hard work.

The future Queen-Spadina station, part of the Metrolinx Ontario Line, will be the new occupant on the block. This building has only seen two residents in its long history:

  • Bank of Hamilton: 1902 to 1924
  • CIBC (Bank of Commerce): 1924 to Present (CIBC has since vacated and moved to 363 Queen St. West.)

Wanting to preserve the architectural heritage of the Bank of Hamilton building, experts have carefully documented, dismantled, and stored parts of its façade. These pieces will be reintegrated into the new station, respecting its architectural legacy.

Curious to check out the new digs? Patience. The station will be completed in 2031, part of the Ontario Line Project. Click the slideshow below to see Metrolinx renderings of the new project.
