Toronto’s Tallest Tower Faces a Standoff
For almost 2 years, the community pool inside Pinnacle One Yonge…Toronto’s tallest residential skyscraper, has been closed due to leaks and structural repairs. The City and Pinnacle International are in a legal deadlock, each refusing to claim responsibility. The leaks caused significant corrosion and damage to structural support beams. These beams only affect aquatic centre parking spaces so the first wave of residents and hotel guests planning to move in this fall are unaffected.
So what’s officially causing the deadlock to fix the 6-lane, 25 metre pool?
The Information Bottleneck: The Withheld Engineering Report
The City is withholding a third-party engineering report explaining the structural damage until Pinnacle International claims responsibility. And Pinnacle International is saying they can’t be responsible until the City unveils the report, saying it’s the City’s fault from aggressive draining in a 10-hour window, rather than draining over multiple days.
The Strategy: Why the City Refuses to Blink
So, why doesn’t the City just give Pinnacle the report? The City believes Pinnacle International’s legal team will dissect it for loopholes that may make the city responsible. A fight between lawyers can prove costly.
The Community Impact: Recreation Continues on Dry Land
In the meantime, the community centre is open with full use gymnasiums, teaching kitchens, kids camps and other recreation.
