Explore Old Toronto: What and Where?

-

The “What” May Be Obvious, but Do You Remember “Where”?

This sign was over 26 feet wide, making it the largest neon sign in the city.

This became a cultural hub and an iconic staple of downtown Toronto.

Sam the Record Man filed for bankruptcy in 2001. This location remained open until 2007. The signs were given a heritage designation, but the new owner, Toronto Metropolitan University, committed to preserving and displaying the signs.

They agreed to install and maintain the sign atop a nearby building at Yonge & Dundas. The restored sign was unveiled in 2018 after some modern restoration and re-lit atop 277 Victoria St., overlooking Sankofa Square.

Did You Guess 347 Yonge Street?

…just North of Dundas Street in the downtown area. We’ll give it to you if you guessed Yonge Street! Who remembers driving or exploring Yonge Street back in the day? These signs were a big part of that section of the city, giving the ‘hood a true “downtown” cultural vibe.
