Toronto has a real soft spot for playful food mashups, and this one might be the most surprising yet. Solly’s Craft Soda, a local brand born at Henderson Brewing, has teamed up with Kraft Dinner. Together they’ve created a limited-edition KD cream soda. It’s officially called KD x Solly’s Cream Soda, and it’s meant to taste a little like your favourite blue box.
What’s in the can?
Picture a classic cream soda, sweet and fizzy, the kind you’d pull from a cottage cooler. Now imagine a gentle hint of that familiar, cozy KD cheesiness drifting in behind it. Kraft Heinz describes the result as a sweet and savoury carbonated drink. The company says it goes well alongside a steaming bowl of mac and cheese, or on its own.
Solly’s founder Adin Wener named the brand after his son, Solly. He said the goal was a novelty soda that would make people smile. It also had to taste like a great Solly’s soda. In the Kraft Heinz announcement, he called the finished drink “wonderfully strange” and added, “and somehow, it works.”
A neighbourhood soda with a famous friend
Solly’s is brewed by Henderson Brewing at 128A Sterling Rd. Its core sodas are low in sugar, and the sugar they do use is real cane sugar. It’s a small, family-owned company, which makes this team-up with a national favourite extra fun to see.
This new can is the latest in a lively run of Kraft Dinner experiments. This year brought KD Mac & Cheesecake with Toronto’s SanRemo Bakery, plus KD Ramen. At the CNE, Booster Juice even blended up a KD Smoothie. It’s clear the blue box isn’t afraid to wander far from the pot.
Where to find KD cream soda
The drink launched on Sept. 23 on Amazon.ca. It’s available only in Canada, while quantities last. Solly’s also sells it on its own website, but demand has been strong. When we last checked, new orders there were temporarily paused. Participating retailers, including Walmart, are expected to carry it starting in early October. Keep an eye on your local shelves.
As for price, the Toronto Sun reported what Solly’s site was charging at launch. That was $2.95 a can, $21.80 for an 8-pack and $64.95 for a 24-pack.
Tell us how it tastes
Have you managed to crack one open yet? We’d love to know if it tastes like dessert, dinner or something delightfully in between. Tell @mytorontonews how it tastes, and whether you’d pour it next to a bowl of KD.
