Toronto’s new Bathurst Quay Common does more than just give us a new space to play.
The 1-acre park, with its sundecks and seating spaces, gives a bigger spotlight to Ireland Park.
OUR IRELAND PARK DESPERATELY NEEDED A NEW NEIGHBOUR
Ireland Park was previously a secluded, forgotten space that seemed separated from the rest of our waterfront.
Bathurst Quay Common moving right next door helps unveil the intrigue of Ireland Park’s limestone wall imported from Kilkenny in the shape of a ship housing names who perished during the potato famine in 1847.
More impressively are the 5 statues created by Rowan Gillespie who depict the hardship of the Irish’s arrival. Gillespie’s similar creations stand along Ireland’s shores to honour their departure.
Bathurst Quay Common holds its own historical significance with the restoration of the expansive Canada Malting Silos and The Corleck Building now home to the Canada Ireland Foundation. It will host exhibitions, live music, theatre performances and rooftop terrace.
