Toronto’s Subway lines carry 181 million riders every year. 

Here are 4 historical facts about our city’s underground rail system:

Number 1

Around 1910, subway plans along Yonge Street were drawn up by politicians, but voters rejected them, favouring streetcars.

Number 2

It wasn’t until 1942 serious planning took hold, with actual construction commencing in 1949.

Number 3

In 1954, this came at a cost of $67 million… back when a soft drink was five cents.

Number 4

The original subway cars had rattan seats. They would remain until the 60s and well into the 70s. 

Number 5
