Village of Yorkville Park: Why is it So Strange?

-

Village of Yorkville Park. It’s one of the best spots to sit and have a gelato or coffee. But did you know it’s actually one of the strangest parks in the city? Here’s why.

On Cumberland Street, there once stood a row of Victorian houses, demolished in the 1950s for the line 2 subway and then an empty parking lot for 40 years.

In 1991, the area was transformed into today’s park showcasing artful landscape, but what’s really cool is those original Victorian lots. They are honored by twelve distinct zones at each property line.

Scots pines with unique seating circles, wildflowers, birches, boardwalks over a wetland garden and a large, re-assembled chunk of the Canadian Shield are just a few of the features of this quirky park.
