With Toronto’s reputation being the “least polite city in Canada”, we like to highlight our better side when it shows, because we believe it shows often! (Editor’s Note: the least polite of Canadian cities is still pretty darn polite)
SO HERE’S A SHOUT-OUT TO MAYBERRY FINE ARTS GALLERY
They installed a street art sculpture of Van Gogh (located across from AGO) in 2018 for public appreciation.
The gallery enlisted artist Joe Fafard (see TD Cow Pasture) who was inspired by Van Gogh during his entire career.
Fafard’s goal to have the eyes “follow you” has definitely been achieved. The entire 3D piece comes incredibly alive as you pass; aptly named “Van Gogh Observes”.
Chatting with Richard Kantor, Gallery Director of Mayberry Fine Art (Toronto), he says their motivation was to have a presence in their new ‘hood after moving from Yorkville.
HOW ARE PEOPLE REACTING?
When asked about the community impact, Kantor says it’s made an impression.
“People love it. It’s become a staple. Artists who paint city scapes have painted the AGO with [our sculpture] in the background, which is really great!” says Kantor.
