Toronto’s 2025-2026 winter at Pearson International Airport has etched itself into weather history with a series of snowfall records, fueled by early storms and a blockbuster January event. While arctic blasts brought cold snaps in December and January, the standout story is the snow with totals hitting unprecedented levels since official records began back in 1937.
Snowiest Single-Day Record
On January 25th, 2026, Pearson recorded 46 cm of snow in one day, shattering the previous mark of 36.8 cm set on January 23, 1966. This lake-effect fueled storm delivered non-stop flakes for over 24 hours, making it the snowiest day ever tracked at the airport.
Downtown Snow Highlight
Downtown Toronto saw up to 61 cm during the same January 25th storm, a remarkable total compared to previous records.
Snowiest January on Record
January 2026 tallied 88.2 cm at Pearson by month’s end, eclipsing all prior January totals dating back to 1937! This made it not just the snowiest January, but a benchmark for sustained winter in the region.
Snowiest Calendar Month Ever
That same 88.2 cm January total claimed the title of snowiest single calendar month overall, topping December 1951’s longstanding 86.6 cm record (held for 75 years). No other month in Pearson’s history has matched this accumulation.
Earliest Heavy Snow of the Season
The winter kicked off with over 5-10 cm on November 9th, 2025; the earliest snowfall since October 22nd, 1969, and the first major November event in over 50 years. It set the tone for what became a season of extremes.
Darn, That Groundhog
As if on cue, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow on February 2nd this week, forecasting six more weeks of winter.
With February just beginning, Toronto’s snowy saga may add even more record-breaking moments this winter.
