If you’re looking for a piece of history off the beaten path, you gotta’ wander the Toronto Carpet Factory area of Liberty Village.
Built between 1899 and 1920, these industrial structures occupy an entire block. They not only produced carpets, but also blankets and uniforms during both World Wars.
Appreciate the arched windows, red brick masonry, stone and wrought iron details winding through these mazes of paved streets that were once the backbone of Toronto’s industry.
The cool aspect of this industrial space was the desire to be completely self-reliant, unheard of at the time. Having provided its own steam generated power, fire pumps and water storage, the factory still uses this network of steam pipes to deliver its heat today.
