In this spot Toronto held its last public execution at the Adelaide Court House in 1862. These executions were major public events until the last was held on March 10th for a Mr. James Brown, guilty of murder. These executions were moved indoors to the Don Jail in 1864.
Then Along Came Terroni
Today, the classical revival architecture is well-preserved and occupied by Terroni, an Italian restaurant operating since 2007. They have done well in honouring this piece of Toronto’s past, making eclectic dining areas within the many heritage spaces that flow in and through the building, including their jail cell wine cellar. Event spaces for large groups showcase the grand, 19th century design. And the 3rd floor lounge is the very spot where the famous Group of Seven artists would gather to eat and socialize. Definitely a unique dining experience with top-tier traditional Italian fare. You can find them at 57 Adelaide Street East.
