Most People Don’t Know This
…but Toronto is blowing up on the world’s foodie stage. This week, we are tastefully shining a spotlight on Toronto’s Culinary Scene.
We’re Making a Splash
Famous chefs and influencers consistently shoutout our city for the fusion cuisine and ingredients inside our markets, food halls and restaurants.
Who, you ask?
Tik Tok’s Viral Keith Lee names Toronto one of his “Top 3” and the “the best pho in his life”.
Mark Wahlberg chose Toronto for a WahlBurger location, because we are “a cutting edge city”.
Jason Mamoa is known to hit Pai Toronto during TIFF, specifically for their Pad Gra Prao.
Chef Anthony Bourdain said we are ”one of the most multicultural cities on the planet”, with “cultural food authenticity”.
Chef David Chang says we are operating as “a world-class city” without fully owning it. In his opinion, we’re the city to watch as we evolve into this world-class status.
Can’t Find Elsewhere
One uniquely Toronto culinary practice is the fusion of flavours that are not able to be experienced anywhere else. We’re talking Jamaican-Italian, French-Japanese, Southern U.S-Asian fusions that create a whole new flavour explosion. How spoiled are us locals?
Our History
Toronto’s modern food scene started with our grocers and stalls… built on over 250 distinct cultural groups. Many being the first outposts of new immigrant communities. Afrim Pristine of Cheese Boutique says his family remembers when only very few cheeses, such as mozzarella and cheddar, were the only options available. Supplying Toronto with ingredients from other homelands was so needed, shoppers would line up out the door to get their hands on a taste of home; just one example of the creation of our international food neighbourhoods.
Other Markets
St. Lawrence Market in 1803, 1910s Chinese shops on York Street, Italian grocers on College, Pat Korean Market in the ‘70s and our 100 year old Greek Town… they anchored today’s neighbourhoods.
